Across the water from Paihia is Russell, the first capital of New Zealand which is surrounded by history. A relaxed riverside settlement in the rural Makatana Coast area, Warkworth has a beguiling old-world charm. A wander through the centre of town will take you past many of its historical buildings – a throwback from its colonial past. Nature lovers should head to Parry Kauri Park, with its centuries-old kauri trees, or to Dome Forest, where you can hike to a hilltop with views that stretch as far as Auckland’s iconic Sky Tower. Nearby attractions include the beautiful wine country, with its excellent estates, quirky cafes, and craft studios, as well as Tawharanui Regional Park (known for its great swimming and surfing), and Goat Island Marine Reserve (for fantastic snorkelling off the beach).

Sandwiched between lush rainforests and gorgeous beaches on the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula, Whangamata is a popular seaside holiday resort and a well-known surfing hotspot. Legendary Hawaiian surfer, Gerry Lopez, famously dubbed this welcoming little surf town ‘the jewel of the Pacific’ after discovering that its unusual bar break creates some of the best waves in New Zealand. The nearby Coromandel Forest Park and Tairua Forest provide an ideal setting for an array of outdoor activities, including short walks, mountain bike trails and the opportunity to explore some wonderful historic gold mining sites. The town centre is strewn with numerous quaint cafes, excellent restaurants and a flurry of gorgeous art galleries and funky craft studios.

Rotorua is known for showcasing our fascinating Maori culture, mud pools, shooting geysers, and natural hot springs as the seething power of inner earth comes to the surface. Boasting 18 incredible lakes, three major rivers, and the mighty Mount Tarawera; these treasured natural assets are all part of Rotorua’s allure.

The region is host to some incredible fishing locations with trophy trout to be had year round on the lakes, rivers and streams. Adventure is right around the corner on the Kaituna River, with White Water Rafting on the world’s highest commercially rafted waterfall; or perhaps you are tempted by the soothing powers of the regions many natural hot springs. The popular tourist city of Napier on the eastern coast of New Zealand’s North Island is one of the country’s most likeable regional centres. The inner-city streets are lined with palm trees and the sculpted Marine Parade is sprinkled with numerous lush parks, landscaped gardens and grand memorials, giving the water’s edge its unique character. Arriving in Napier gives the distinct feeling of stepping back in time, owing to its unique concentration of remarkably well preserved 1930s art-deco buildings, built after much of the city was destroyed in a massive earthquake in 1931. The city is also known for its gannet colony at Cape Kidnappers and its abundance of world-class wineries on the surrounding plains. This is the place to enjoy a Mediterranean climate, an excellent variety of restaurants and cafes and the air of an affluent English seaside resort.

Located at the southern end of New Zealand’s North Island, the Lonely Planet names Wellington as “the coolest little capital in the world”.

As well as being a ‘cool little capital’ and the seat of government, Wellington is compact and easy to get around, locals often say you can walk anywhere in under 30 minutes. On most visitors list of places to visit is the National Museum, also known as Te Papa, meaning ‘our place’; one of the world’s best interactive museums. A ride on the city’s cable car takes you up the hill to Kelburn and the city’s botanical gardens, from here you can enjoy beautiful panoramic views over the city and across the sea.

Wellington is well known as the country’s culinary capital, home to some of the New Zealand’s best award-winning restaurants, great bars and some wonderfully quirky cafes, great food trucks, day and night markets. Almost everything about Wellington, the mix of history, culture and creative energy epitomise the diversity, colour and inclusiveness of this city surrounded by water and hills.

Famous for its pristine golden sand beaches and crystal clear aquamarine waters, the tiny picturesque town of Kaiteriteri is used by many as a base for exploring the renowned Abel Tasman National Park. However, the little seaside town itself has plenty to offer visitors seeking a relaxing beach vacation on this little piece of paradise. Kayaking is a popular activity as it is a great way to witness the abundant local marine wildlife.

Dolphins, penguins and whales are regularly sighted and those who prefer a more up close and personal approach can even take a dip with a local colony of seals who are known to playfully interact with swimmers. Complimented by some of New Zealand's freshest seafood served up at quaint local kiosks, it is easy to see why Kaiteriteri continues to be voted as one of New Zealand's favourite seaside resorts.

Where mountains meet the sea and wildlife takes over civilisation, Kaikōura is best known for its vast coastline which hugs the Pacific Ocean. Kaikōura is a year-round destination featuring some of the most memorable experiences that New Zealand has to offer including Whale Watching and one of our all-time favourite activities in New Zealand, Swimming with the Dolphins.

Add in a visit to the local seal colonies, watching the incredibly graceful Royal Albatross, a walk around the Kaikōura Peninsular, a visit to the museum and simply taking in sun rising over the Pacific; there’s lots to do here.

Situated on the eastern coast of New Zealand’s South Island, the vibrant city of Christchurch is the largest city on the island. Dubbed the 'Garden City', it is known for its many lush green spaces and possesses a multicultural charm with an added dash of Victorian flair.

The city offers a fabulous array of activities, including punting down the Avon River, helicopter tours, hot air ballooning, whale and dolphin watching. Enjoy a stroll around the beautifully sculptured parks, visit the Christchurch Botanic Gardens and browse numerous art galleries. 

Mount Cook Village (also known as Aoraki) is located near the west coast of the South Island of New Zealand. This retreat - lying within the Aoraki Mount Cook National Park - is an absolute must for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts, offering an outstanding wilderness experience. The national park, which has been given UNESCO World Heritage status, is home to New Zealand’s highest mountain, its longest glacier its darkest night skies. In addition to hiking trails to suit all fitness levels, the area also offers boat tours along Terminal Lake (the end of the Tasman Glacier), 4x4 adventures, and world-renowned stargazing opportunities, while the Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre boasts a 3D theatre and a planetarium.

The second-largest city on the South Island, Dunedin (Celtic for Edinburgh) overlooks the Otago Harbour and Peninsula. There’s no urban sprawl here, instead, you’ll find impressive historic architecture, parks, and natural beauty in abundance. More than 20 beaches can be reached within 30 minutes and stunning, unspoilt coastlines make for excellent hikes and sunset shots. You’ll want to visit Gothic-revival Larnach Castle, known for its colourful history, a resident ghost and impressive treats, Speight’s Brewery for tours, tastings and hearty meals, glorious St Paul’s Cathedral and the Ice Stadium to watch a game or two of curling. Art lovers should make sure to explore the impressive street art trail through the historic buildings of the Warehouse Precinct.

Resting on the banks of the stunning Lake Manapouri, beneath the Mighty Cathedral Mountains, the township of Manapouri is known by many as merely a base for excursions into the exquisite glacier-carved wilderness of the surrounding Fiordland. Manapori itself has much to offer with the lake dotted with 33 pristine wooded islands which are best explored by kayak. The shoreline stretches across 157 km, and is characterised by lush rainforest, secluded beaches and hidden bays. If kayaking isn’t really your cup of tea, there is a wide range of boats available for hire as well as luxury cruises and even water taxis. However you choose to get around, you will undoubtedly revel in the seclusion and tranquil atmosphere of this remote little township and its extraordinary neighbouring lake.

Nestled in picture postcard fashion on the shores of the Lake Wakatipu, and with a reputation as the adrenalin capital of the Southern Hemisphere, Queenstown is a sophisticated resort destination like no other.

The gateway to the Fiordland National Park, the town is surrounded by mountains, glaciers, fiords, backcountry fly fishing rivers, Lord of the Rings film scenes, deserted gold mining settlements and a host of exciting tour options. 

The quaint west coast town of Franz Josef has a few hundred permanent residents, with numbers swelling during the holidays to around 2000 visitors per day. This is glacier country and Franz Josef glacier (after which the town is named) and Fox Glacier, some 23 kilometres further south, are the main attractions. The town offers a myriad of options for cozy accommodation, especially after the snow and ice activities on offer. Combine a helicopter tour with a guided walk on the glacial terrain to view ice caves, and spectacular crevasses and pinnacles. Helicopter tours over the two glaciers are also available, with a stop off at the head of either glacier so you can experience the frozen landscape up close.
