The gateway to the Fiordland National Park, the town is surrounded by mountains, glaciers, fiords, backcountry fly fishing rivers, Lord of the Rings film scenes, deserted gold mining settlements and a host of exciting tour options. 

Milford Sound, New Zealand’s most well-known tourist destination, is not really a sound at all but a fjord as it was created by a succession of glaciers which carved through the rocks as they gouged a track to the sea leaving in their wake the impressive rock formations visible today. Home to some diverse and particularly unusual wildlife including fur seals and crested penguins, as well as bottlenose and dusky dolphins, this geographical gem is a must-see for nature lovers. With the striking Mitre Peak towering over head, sheer rocky cliffs rise vertically out of the calm dark waters while nearby, the waters of the exquisite Bowen Falls plunge down a 520-foot drop before crashing dramatically into the fjord below. With its remarkable geographical setting and its unbelievable abundance of wildlife, it is easy to see why writer Rudyard Kipling once called Milford Sound the “eighth natural wonder of the world.”

Tucked between rugged schist mountains in the Central Otago region of New Zealand’s South Island, Gibbston Valley unfolds along the dramatic Kawarau River gorge between Queenstown and Cromwell. Known as the “Valley of the Vines,” it is celebrated for boutique vineyards producing elegant cool-climate pinot noir. The landscape is strikingly austere yet beautiful: golden grasses ripple in the wind, vines trace the valley floor, and snow-dusted peaks rise in the distance. Clyde is a charming little town in the Central Otago Region of the South Island of New Zealand. Located on State Highway 8, between Cromwell and Alexandra, it makes a fantastic retreat, with an enviable climate, a relaxed ‘cafe culture’ and plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy. As it is a favoured stop on the Otago Central Rail Trail, the town offers mountain bike rentals and useful route maps of the region. Nearby Lake Dunstan, meanwhile, is great for fishing, boating, kayaking and water skiing. Try to time your visit to Clyde with the annual Blossom Festival (the week of the 22nd of September), when the orchards of the region are in full bloom.

Set in the picturesque Waitaki Valley on New Zealand’s South Island, Kurow is a peaceful rural town renowned for its vineyards and dramatic landscapes. Surrounded by rugged hills and the glacial-fed Waitaki River, it forms part of the celebrated Waitaki wine region, known for producing elegant pinot noirs and aromatic whites. Travellers are drawn here to savour local wines and artisanal produce, cycle sections of the renowned Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail, or cast a line in the pristine rivers and nearby lakes. Heritage buffs can explore early hydroelectric schemes and historic stone buildings, while nature lovers will find endless walking trails and scenic lookouts. With its blend of rich history, outdoor adventure, and fine wine, Kurow offers an inviting taste of authentic South Island charm.

Idyllically situated on the southern shore of New Zealand just 75 kilometres from the city of Christchurch, Akaroa is a historic French and British settlement resting in the heart of an ancient volcano. The town is known for its picturesque harbour, colonial architecture, and French cuisine. Visitors can take a lovely harbour cruise to spot rare Hector’s dolphins, penguins and fur seals, or explore the waters by kayaking or going stand up paddleboarding.

The French and English heritage have remained strong in Akaroa which is highly evident in the wealth of well-maintained French and English buildings, and the abundance of French-focused restaurants and cafes. The award-winning Barry’s Bay Cheese has even continued with original methods of cheese-making for more than a century, which can be witnessed through their gallery window during milking season.

Along the Maruia River on New Zealand’s South Island, Maruia lies within a broad valley framed by mountain ranges of the Southern Alps. Pastures and forested hills stretch across a landscape shaped by glacial rivers, where quiet rural roads wind through farmland and pockets of native beech forest. The clear river attracts anglers, while walkers explore tracks through nearby conservation land that lead to elevated viewpoints and open river terraces. A short drive away, the geothermal pools of Maruia Springs provide mineral bathing beside the river, contrasting with the valley’s cool mountain air. Travellers crossing the Southern Alps often pause here to hike, fish, or simply follow the valley’s winding road through open countryside.

Located close to the tip of NewZealand’s South Island, Golden Bay, also known as Mohua, is a shallow bay just northwest of Tasman Bay. It boasts calm waters, cascading waterfalls, pristine beaches and quaint villages. Sheltering the northern edge of the bay, the protected Farewell Spit- featuring a bird sanctuary and protected wetlands, extends for over 30 kilometres, making it the longest sand spit in New Zealand. Dotting the shores are an array of flourishing communities including the thriving artist’s community of Takaka. The bay is also home the Pupu Springs, which are the clearest and largest cold water springs in the southern hemisphere. Take the picturesque drive over Taka Hil, sample locally-harvested scallops-for which the bay is renowned for, and soak up the incredible natural beauty of this magnificent area. 

A collection of ancient sunken river valleys filled with the waters of the Pacific Ocean, The Marlborough Sounds are where forested hills rise steeply from the sea around an intricate coastline of sheltered inlets and sandy bays.

With three main bodies of water – Queen Charlotte, Kenepuru and Pelorous Sound, there are over 50 reserves in this scenic playground and includes the famous Queen Charlotte Track.
